Patent 2016: everything you need to know before the exam

The deadline for the DNB (national patent diploma) is approaching! To get it, you have to validate the skills of the common base but also satisfy the continuous assessment and pass the final tests. Delivered by a jury, this first diploma is nevertheless not necessary to pass in class of second.

The final exam represents 160 points

On the menu this year: an oral test and three written tests which each count for 40 points, for a total of 160 points. The exam will begin on Thursday, June 23 with French, from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and mathematics, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The last written test, history-geography-moral and civic education will take place the next day, Friday, June 24, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

In French, students will work on a dictation, two writing topics to choose from and a text comprehension questionnaire. The math test will be structured around independent exercises and each of the disciplines – history, geography and moral and civic education – will include a variety of questions and exercises.

Note: the 2016 patent is marked by the appearance of moral and civic education to replace civic education. However, the duration of the test, its nature, its structure and its scoring remain the same.

The art history test takes place within the college between April 15 and June 23. This 15-minute oral before a jury composed of two teachers consists of two parts: a presentation then an interview with the jury.

Continuous control: 200 points out of 360

To obtain your certificate, you must also have a good average all year round. Third grade marks in all subjects – with the exception of history-geography – are added together. In total, continuous assessment counts for 200 points, with coefficients varying from 1 to 2 depending on the subjects and the series, general or professional. During the exam in 2015, almost all of the students who obtained more than 11/20 in the continuous assessment passed their DNB.

It is also possible to score additional points with the optional options: Latin, Greek, foreign or regional language, professional discovery or even French sign language. Points above 10 out of 20 are added to the total counted in the other disciplines.

Get a mention

In the end, the student obtains his DNB if he totals at least 180 points out of 360. The mention "quite well" is granted from 216 points. The mention "good" is delivered with more than 252 points and "very good" with more than 288 points. Obtaining one of these last two mentions can make it possible to benefit from merit scholarships.

The results of the DNB will be displayed in the establishments no later than July 8, 2016. This year is the last edition of the "old formula" DNB before the introduction of new tests in 2017.
