Charisma: what is it, signs, how to develop it?
Highly valued in our society, especially on social networks, charism is the ability to please, convince and unite people around you. What are the signs of charism? How to develop it? Advice from Johanna Rozenblum, clinical psychologist.
Definition: what is charism?
Charism has its origin in theology. These are extraordinary gifts given by the Holy spirit to a person or group of people for the good of the community. In sociology, developed by Max Weber in Economy and Society, the charism is "the belief in extraordinary quality (…) A character, who is, so to speak, endowed with supernatural or superhuman forces or characters, or at least outside of daily life, inaccessible to ordinary mortals; or who is considered to be sent by God or as an example, and therefore considered to be a 'leader'. Today, "charisma is the ability that some people have to unite around it or a project and capture attention," adds Johanna Rozenblum, a clinical psychologist in Paris.
Signs: how to recognize a charismatic person?
A person's charisma can be measured by many qualities, such as the ability to:

"the charisma is recognised in the first place because of its relational ease, that is, the person's ability to build relationships with the other people around him. Other signs are the desire to succeed as a state of mind and a certain form of seduction which naturally allows people to join around or a project," notes the psychologist. Beware, the charismatic person is not a tyrant who uses his power with authority. "it is important to remember that charism is not manipulation. Charismatic people have real professional and social skills that capture attention," explains Johanna Rozenblum. Charismatic people also have the ability to be interested in and listen to others. The charisma also lies in a way of being, an appreciated and attractive presence, a gesture, a presence that gives the person a natural authority.
What are the advantages of charism?
Charism is a quality highly valued in all spheres of life, friendly, loving, professional. He is a facilitator because he makes it possible to advance a project, galvanize, enthuse, mobilise... Be careful, however: "the charism must remain a quality that fringe by allowing you to mobilize around you to create new things. The drift would be to use it for more personal purposes, warns Johanna Rozenblum.
Lack of charisma: what causes and consequences?
"Charism is one of the facets of self-esteem and self-confidence. Without self-esteem, it is more difficult to make one's voice heard, to make decisions or to oppose it," explains the psychologist. However, one may not be recognized by his or her peers as a charismatic person, but may be respected, and heard, for other qualities. For example, a shy person may be recognized at work for his rigour; in a friendly network for his honesty or kindness.
How to develop one's charisma?
Defined in theology as a supernatural gift, charism is often perceived as an innate gift, "you have it or not". However, it is possible to work on certain qualities to develop and acquire a little more charisma. Skill, self-confidence, self-control, constancy, benevolence, altruism, seduction and empathy are all qualities that can be developed and that contribute to increasing one's charisma. "Charism is the emerging part of self-esteem. It is by working this confidence, by evolving, by opening up to others that charism ends up expressing itself", says Johanna Rozenblum. "it is by working on this confidence, by evolving, by opening up to others that the charism finally expresses itself", assures Johanna Rozenblum.
