Everyone knows YouTube, but do we really know this company whose flagship product we use every day?David Vu, a graduate of EM Strasbourg in 2019 and Executive accounting within this video giant, reveals behind the scenes of YouTube and Google.

David's journey seen

Can you present your academic journey?

I am from Strasbourg and I did all my schooling there.I studied at the International Pontonniers high school in the European-English section. After my bac S, I turned to a DUT Tech de Co, because I needed to experiment, to be in practice.I then joined the EM PGE Strasbourg.I was lucky to go to the University of Adélaide in Australia for a year, allowing me to solidify my level of English. It was really an asset, because I greatly gained self -confidence.In the last year, I decided to achieve a double-diploma in marketing and event management.

What about your professional journey?

My first pro experience took place in DUT.I explored different sectors that I liked. For example, I was an intern in marketing in a contemporary art or seller gallery at Décathlon. This is where I discovered that I loved contact with people, advice to customers ...

In Australia, I turned to tech boxes and I managed to have a part -time internship, in parallel with my lessons, in an Australian startup specializing in augmented reality.I also had a part-time job in another startup: HousinganyWhere, a kind of airbnb of sublet.

In caesura, my dream was to join a tech box, but I received a lot of refusals.I was particularly interested in HP at the time and I was accepted, but I preferred to go to Air France who offered me a job in digital.I was in charge of the creation of mini-sites and the organization of competition games for the Air France community. It was my first overview of the world of digital and I learned a lot.

The Google dream

How did you get to Google?

For my second caesura internship, I decided to refocus on tech and applied to Microsoft, the legendary box!I was Channel Marketing Manager Assistant.I assisted my boss on the B2B event organization and communication. It went very well, to the point that they offered to stay at home alternating for my last year at EM Strasbourg. It was perfectly stuck to my training in marketing and event management. It was a great experience in tech, but I really felt like I was not in contact with the product.

I spoke with a friend who made Microsoft's transition to Google and I therefore made the processes to become account Strategist. These are those who manage the group's clients of the group. It’s a great jack-of-all-trades, the dream experience!

What did you like about Google in particular?

David Vu, diplômé de l’EM Strasbourg et Account Executive chez YouTube

Google, it was Top of Mind for me.Huge campuses, folklore ... These are all elements that made me want to belong to the Google ecosystem.I was on the European headquarters in Ireland, where we find eight restaurants with any type of free food, sports, games and swimming pools!I was able to take advantage of it a few months before confinement.Google allowed us to get into the country of our choice, I chose France to telework.

Recruitment processes at Google decrypt

How did the recruitment processes go?

I signed up for Google Ad Camp, a bootcamp reserved for future graduates of business schools organized in several cities in the world. Before the AD camp, you have to apply on the dedicated site.If the CV is selected, you spend two rounds of maintenance. These are real interviews given by other Googlers. The peculiarity at Google is that everyone can bring interviews after having followed a advanced training.

I was asked if I wanted to have a first job or an internship, then I was reminded after the event.

Within the group, there are five rounds.I had already carried out two, so I had my last three interviews with seniors from Google. The first is the RRK, Role-Related Knowledge, where you are asked questions about the position and your technical knowledge. The second is more dedicated to corporate culture, it is a central pillar of recruitment at Google. You have to be very humble to succeed.

Finally, there is the signature maintenance of Google which can be scary.Recruiters ask candidates a very broad question. For example: "Tomorrow, you launch your own business, what are you doing first?"Or" Imagine that you have a bus, how many golf ball would it take to fill your bus? Here, Google does not assess the answer, but the reflection. It is important to think out loud and show that you are logical.

Google's backstage

What were the received ideas that you had about Google/YouTube before integrating it?

I had always been told that there were brilliant people at Google and I was very excited about working with them. It’s very stimulating on a daily basis.Of course, we read a lot of things in the press, so I asked myself questions about corporate culture and management. On the contrary, the Dublin campus is a huge hub very open with individuals from different cultures.Managers are very kind, precisely because the recruitment processes are there to ensure that people stick to corporate culture.

This diversity also makes it possible to grow and to become very empathetic with others. This experience really impacted me positively. We are also fortunate to have communities that promote ethnic groups or religious groups for example.I am part of the internal association dedicated to Asian Googlers.

A secret that nobody knows about Youtube?

Many people do not know it, but YouTube is the second search engine in France. When you think of search engines, you think especially of Bing, for example. But youtube is in front of them. The duration of viewing in young people is also very high.Among 18-34 year olds, it is 92% coverage and 50 minutes of viewing per day, which places us above Netflix.

The profession of executive accounting

Today you are accustomed to youtube. What is this role?

Two months ago, I had the opportunity to go from birthday to Acount Executive and joined the teams specializing in advertising on Youtube. It allows me to stay in contact with the product.Today, I specialized on Ads YouTube and more particularly YouTube for Action, a product that encourages users to buy.I work with birthdays with strategists whose customers strongly use YouTube.I collaborate with them to offer them a support plan and accelerate their presence on this site.

How is a typical day at Youtube?

There is no really type day.The advantage of this type of job, in a corporate culture like that of Google, is that you can organize your working time as you see fit.No one judges you on presenteeism, but on the final results.

I'm starting at 9:00 am to 9:30 am, I treat my emails, then I make an appointment with the strategist accounts that have customers with high potential on YouTube.During these meetings, I build with personalized support with them for their customers. There are good practices to respect so that users do not immediately jump for advertising. There is a whole mechanic to follow on the creative part, the orchestration of the campaigns, the formats used, the target audience, the launch date of the campaign ... It's all a job!

We are also lucky to have additional jobs when we are senior. We can get involved in the projects and become POC, for Point of Contact.POCs specialize in a product and become the person to whom to contact if necessary.I decided to specialize on the Measurement Part, Tracking of Performance on YouTube.

Recruitment prospects and tips to integrate Google

Today, does Google recruit trainees, alternating or permanent contracts?

Google France offers internships, especially at Youtube. The alternations are very rare in Paris, but it is possible! The recruitment processes are the same, but the announcements disappear quickly because many candidates apply for each of them.My advice: check the LinkedIn profile of recruiters who often publish posts related to the group's recruitment needs.Do not hesitate to inquire and go to the various events organized by Google.

Today, marketing positions are rather based in Paris, while commercial functions are in Ireland. It is very difficult to enter and start your career at Youtube. You usually have to make your weapons as a strategist.

A advice for those who would like to join YouTube or Google?

There is often an inferiority complex that prevents students from applying at Google. The received idea is that when we apply, our candidacy will be rejected directly. We think that Google is not accessible to business school graduates. However, it is possible! To put the odds on his side, it is better to know someone at Google who can refer you. This usually allows you to pass the first stage of the screenings and to reach HR interviews directly.
