Par Boris Compain, France Bleu Touraine Indre-et-LoireOn 20 and 27 June, the Tourangeaux were called upon to renew the 38 elected members of the departmental Council of Indre-et-Loire. But do you know the powers of this House?
In just one month, on 20 June, it will be the first round of elections to renew departmental and regional councils. Given the health context, it cannot be said that these elections are, for the time being, among the main concerns of the French. However, they are very important for our daily life: in Indre-et-Loire, the elected officials of the department manage a budget of more than 600 million euros.
More than half of its budget devoted to social action
Social action includes integration, with, for example, the payment of active solidarity income to 15,000 beneficiaries. It is also everything that encompasses childhood: from the pleasure of nannies to the protection of mothers and children, not to mention the support of unaccompanied foreign minors, and not negligible, the various housing subsidies for the poorest. Finally, in social work, there is everything relating to disability and the elderly, including APA, personalised support for independence and the renovation of Ehpad.
Colleges and roads
Another major area of competence of the departmental Council is the colleges, whose construction, renovation and canteens are financed by it. They serve 19,000 meals a day for pupils, many of whom also receive half board assistance.
The department also maintains more than 3,600 kilometres of roads in Indre-et-Loire. Finally, we owe part of our leisure time, through numerous subsidies to the voluntary, sports and cultural sectors. The departmental Council is the owner of eight emblematic monuments, such as the royal fortress of Chinon, the royal city of Loches or the Priory of Saint-Cosme à la riche.
With 2,800 employees, the departmental Council is also one of the largest employers in Indre-et-Loire
On 20 and 27 June, the inhabitants of Indre-et-Loire will therefore have to elect one man and one woman to represent each of the 19 cantons of Indre-et-Loire. A total of 71 binomials have submitted their applications.
