Ice cream sales boom in Italy | lepetitjournal.com

In the time of the Covid, ice cream is more popular than ever in Italy. The main agricultural union Coldiretti, underlines an upsurge in consumption as soon as phase 2 enters.

The craving for ice cream is exploding, boosted by the almost return to normal post-lockdown and the favorable temperatures. This is underlined by Coldiretti, the main Italian agricultural union, according to which 9 out of 10 Italians do not hide their sudden desire for an ice cream cone. On the coast of the Roman capital alone, 240 tons of ice cream were sold in one weekend, according to Coldiretti. A phenomenon that extends throughout the peninsula, from North to South, in town centers as well as in seaside resorts. Indeed, according to the union, Italy is number one on the artisanal ice cream market, as much for its annual turnover as for the number of gelaterie present in the country. The data is astronomical: an annual revenue of 2.8 billion euros for nearly 40,000 glaciers.

This renewed interest has a significant economic impact for the country. The sector generates jobs, employing nearly 150,000 people. In addition, with more than 220 million liters of milk used, 64 million kilos of sugar and 21 million kilos of fresh fruit passed each year, the entire agri-food chain comes to life again.

With 94% of regular consumers, Italy is clearly on its way to a summer of ice cream. With the hot temperatures of this month of May (an additional 1.41 degrees), demand is not about to fall in the coming days, for those whose annual consumption amounts to 6 kilos per person. In a jar or a cone, traditional or exotic tastes, ice creams will still be queens for this summer season.
