Private heritage in Wallonia: masterpiece at risk

"this is silent genocide." Here is how several officials describe the state of Belgium's heritage. In recent months, many of us have pushed the doors of a church or castle, like Prince charming discovering the sleeping beauty. But how long will these places be able to amaze us if they fall into ruin?

"an attractive heritage is, however, very profitable," says Bernard de Gerlache, President of the ASBL des habitations historiques et des jardins de Belgique (ASBL des habitations historiques et des jardins de Belgique). Its association has 1,300 members, all private owners of exceptional properties. It is formal, for one euro spent on private heritage, it brings back three in tourism, in HORECA and in construction.

Bernard de Gerlache goes even further, he believes that property owned by private owners costs the community less overall and supports him: "the owners are the first custodians of their property and they are not paid to do that. They simply have the privilege of living in an exceptional home."
