Should I Buy a Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1S/T or Ford F-150 Lightning?
Are you lost in the face of the diversity of options available to you? Discover our opinions on the Tesla Cybertruck, the Rivian R1S/T or the Ford F-150 Lightning! If these three options are worth considering and should be preferred over gas-powered options.
Pickups: what is the need?
The first question to ask is: what are you going to do with them? Indeed, your choice largely depends on how useful you expect to get from this truck. Buy what you want and need when you want it and when you need it – and when it is. available (which is not the case for Tesla and Ford pickups at the moment!).
The Tesla Cybertruck
The Tesla has the specs for the biggest payload, the biggest towing capacity, and the longest distance on the battery. Plenty of power outlets. A ramp in the tailgate. If you are a courier, trader or farmer, this is probably the best choice.
It is true that the design of the Cybertruck confuses many people who are used to seeing a truck with a conventional design. However, ask yourself this: if you had a clean sheet, no idea what a pickup truck was supposed to look like, and a lofty drag coefficient target, would you really design something so obviously inefficient than a conventional-looking truck?
Finally, at $39,000, the Tesla Cybertruck is much cheaper than the Rivian ($69,000).
The Rivian R1S/T
The Rivian is best for outdoor enthusiasts. The tank towers, this storage tunnel, the accessories for camping. If you want to tow your boat occasionally and dream of off-roading on the weekends, then go with the Rivian.
Be careful though, the Rivian is not proven and does not (yet) have a repair network.
The Ford F-150 Lightning
On the other hand, if you really want to use the truck bed as a "real" truck bed, then opt for the F-150 instead. A good price, a good network of dealers and a proven platform.
Note that the Ford doesn't do anything quite as well as the Rivian or Tesla: lower payload, lower towing capacity, lower distance on battery. It would be good for a tradesman, but not as good as the Tesla. It would be good for camping, but not as good as the Rivian.
But we shouldn't be unfair either: Ford has built millions of F150s and it's been the best-selling vehicle in the United States for years. It's probably not for nothing... Thus, Ford is a safe bet for purchase, use and possibly resale. Financing will be readily available through Ford Motor Credit.
Three reasons why the Ford F-150 Lighting is a winner for us:
- It's already on the market and relatively cheaper than Tesla and Rivian. It's also sturdier.
- The Ford's range of features is amazing and far exceeds what Tesla and Rivian have shown so far.
- It benefits from the Ford's off-road heritage and therefore off-roading is a bit better than Tesla and Rivian's.
The easy answer is to drive each of them them and see what you think. But since none are currently available, this is not possible. Buying a Rivian would be questionable since they have no vehicles on the road. Between Tesla and Ford, you would have to drive a Mustang Mach E and a Tesla Model 3. This would at least give you an idea of what their respective pickups will look like…
